Paul Ryan on Healthcare

Fellow Conservatives,

This month I voted against legislation that would result in the massive expansion of a government-run health care program.  H.R. 3162 would expand taxpayer funded healthcare to over 2 million children currently covered by private health care plans and cost taxpayers $27.5 billion over five years

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), was created to provide health care assistance for low-income children whose family incomes were a little too high to qualify for Medicaid.  Expanding the program to new higher income families will hurt seniors and working families and increase the deficit by over $72 billion in ten years.

Congress should be making reforms to help insure the uninsured, make health care coverage more affordable for working families and give patients better access to quality health care. I support extending the State Children’s Health Insurance Program to keep fulfilling its original purpose, but I oppose this fiscally irresponsible bill that raises taxes, cuts Medicare and goes far beyond the original intent of the SCHIP program.
