REGULATORY REFORM

Wisconsin’s regulatory climate has cost the state good paying jobs. In 2006, after years of doing battle with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources over wet land permits, Menards announced that it would expand its operations in Iowa and Ohio instead of Eau Claire. The decision means of a loss of 600 -800 new jobs in Wisconsin.

“We spent more than three years of frustration and over $1 million of our money trying to build this project here in Eau Claire and never received permission to do so,” Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott told the Leader-Telegram in Eau Claire. “We are obviously frustrated and disappointed.”

A survey of Wisconsin business leaders illustrates their frustration with the state’s poor regulatory climate and finds that larger manufacturers with options to expand their operations out of state often don’t consider expansion in Wisconsin as an alternative.

Club for Growth supports regulatory reforms that will make Wisconsin more hospitable to companies seeking to locate or expand their operations in Wisconsin. Regulatory Reform
