Less than 2 years ago, Governor Doyle and the legislature created a Regional Transit Authority to solve the transportation mess in Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha. A $2 tax on rental cars was created to pay for it.
So far, that tax has generated a half million dollars. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel REPORTED that $496,000 of that money -- nearly every penny --- is going to pay five lobbyists and a public relations guru up to $250 an hour to lobby the state legislature to raise the rental car tax from $2 to $15. A 650% increase!
Not a dime of that $2 tax is going to pay for roads or busses or even trains.
